A Home Office

I’ve been working all day on negotiating a home library/office/workspace.  The coffee shops and WiFi spots are getting a bit tired for me right now.  There are certain tasks that work well in that environment, but it gets old lugging around books and trying to carve out a good place to do reference-heavy work.  Public space can be fairly distracting and sometimes even the friendliest coffee shops start giving you that ’should you be paying rent?’ kind of look.

So here’s the adventure:  convert full time guest room into a home office that can also function as a part-time guest room.  It’s exactly like a Transformer.  Only no one’s made a dumb movie about it yet.

I can’t imagine anyone still reading this post – but if you are, you may want to know that the walls are now a really good green color, kinda like a bowl of ripe green apples in a faded antique painting of a bowl of ripe green apples.  The ceiling is now really dark blue (I think I’m gonna have to lighten it up a shade – those misleading paint samples!) – and still to come are a universe of gold five-point stars on the ceiling.  A lot of cathedrals have blue ceilings with gold stars.  I’ve always wanted to do that and since I won’t have a cathedral this year, the idea gets used in the office.

I also built shelves out of seven 8′ 1″X10″ boards and a lot of bricks.  I’ve been fishing books out of boxes in my basement for the last 18 months.  After shopping for bookshelves, it finally occurred to me that shelving costs way too much and everything I actually like costs way way too much.  So I spent $160 on said materials and some wood stain and now have about 640 inches of shelving.  And it looks cool.  I hope I can keep it from falling over and crushing me.

Ah-ha! So that’s what you had propped up on the garbage cans painting today! (You didn’t know I stalked you family, did ya?) Enjoy your office…the ceiling sounds cool.

Do you need help putting stars up? I like Orion. It’s my favorite because I actually have a formation of Orion on my right arm in moles. Granted, he’s missing the belt, but still!

But, seriously, if you have a step ladder (I’m kinda short), I’d love to help stick some constellations up in your office.

Lol. This reminds me of a video we watched of the guy who thought of Precious Moments. He tried to recreate the Sistine Chapel in PM’s. I think he’s crazy… Certifiably. I’m not saying your a looney, btw, it was just a bunny trail. Promise.

    Resa,
If you’re going to stalk us, you should at least stop by and grab a paintbrush!

    Kris,
I haven’t figured out how to apply the stars yet – I need the ‘right’ color and a stamp or stencil. Not sure. I like the idea of constellations though. I’ll keep you posted.

I have done the technique for bookshelves of which you speak.

    Bricks sounds a bit tippy… and scary… I utilized landscaping cement gizmos… (technical term)…

I hope the bricks with the weight of the books stay in place… If they don’t feel free to email me and I will shoot you a pick of the landscaping cement gizmo’s I used to great effect.

    Peace.

I myself have bookshelves made of bricks and slabs of wood. Have not fallen yet under the ever looming danger of three boys who enjoy destroying things.
